Double donation – When two gifts create a miracle

Longing for a child is a deeply personal and often emotional journey. For some, the path to parenthood becomes more complex, and when neither one’s own eggs nor sperm can be used, double donation – a unique gift from both egg and sperm donors – may be the solution that opens the door to a long-awaited family.

At Ovumia Stockholm, you will meet a team that truly understands the emotions and challenges you face. We offer a safe, empathetic, and scientifically grounded way forward, guiding you through every step toward your greatest dream. .

What is double donation and why choose Ovumia Stockholm?

Double donation is an IVF treatment where both the eggs and sperm come from donors. This means that the child will not have a genetic link to the intended parent/parents. At the same time, this treatment offers a unique opportunity for heterosexual couples, same-sex female couples, and single women who, for medical reasons, are unable to use their own reproductive cells.

At Ovumia Stockholm, we combine an extensive donor bank with long-standing experience and specialist expertise. Our carefully selected egg and sperm donors have undergone comprehensive medical tests, genetic screening, and personal interviews. This means we can offer donors who are in good health and have no known hereditary diseases. Our egg donors are between 23 and 35 years old, and our sperm donors are between 18 and 45.

Requirements and laws surrounding double donation in Sweden

In Sweden, only open donations are permitted, meaning that the child has the right to know the identity of the donors upon reaching a mature age. It is important to understand, however, that neither the child nor the donors have any legal or financial obligations toward one another.

To undergo double donation, the woman must be of reproductive age and not have reached 46 years. In addition, a psychosocial assessment with a psychologist or behavioral therapist is always included, giving you the opportunity to discuss your feelings, thoughts, and considerations about the treatment and the future. If you are a couple, both partners must participate in discussions and evaluations.

Your journey through double donation – step by step

We are here to support you throughout the entire process:

  • Initial consultation & assessment: We get to know you, review your medical history and previous treatments, and answer all your questions.
  • Psychological consultation: A more in-depth psychosocial evaluation is conducted, giving you the chance to reflect on your decision and its implications.
  • Donor selection: We work with both in-house and external sperm banks and in-house egg bank that provide carefully screened, high-quality donors. According to Swedish law, you cannot choose your donors yourself. The doctor selects suitable donors based on your characteristics, to help ensure that the child resembles you/both of you.
  • Fertilization & embryo culture: Eggs from the donor are fertilized with donor sperm in our laboratory using ICSI, where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg. The embryos are cultured to the blastocyst stage, and those reaching good quality are frozen.
  • Embryo transfer: An embryo is thawed and transferred to the uterus. The treatment starts approximately three weeks before with hormone tablets and continues with vaginal hormone suppositories taken both before and after the transfer.
  • Pregnancy test & continued support: About two weeks later, a pregnancy test is performed. Regardless of the result, we remain by your side to provide support, guidance, and plan the next steps together.

Are there any risks with double donation?

With pregnancies using donated eggs, there is a slightly increased risk of high blood pressure and preeclampsia, particularly for women over 40. We always discuss these risks thoroughly during your medical consultation so that you feel safe and well informed.
