IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) – Your path to family with Ovumia Stockholm
Dreaming of a child is one of life’s most fundamental desires. When things don’t go as planned, IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) can be the solution that makes all the difference and transforms longing into reality.
At Ovumia Stockholm, you’ll meet an IVF clinic in Sweden that combines top medical expertise, the latest technology and deeply personal care. We are not just an IVF clinic – we are your trusted partner on the journey to building the family you have always dreamed of.
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), also known as test tube fertilization, involves bringing eggs and sperm together outside the body in our highly specialized laboratory. Here, fertilization takes place in a safe and controlled environment. The best-quality embryo is then selected for transfer to the uterus. If the treatment results in several good-quality embryos, the remaining ones can be frozen for potential future attempts.
IVF is the most effective treatment for involuntary childlessness. At Ovumia Stockholm, we treat couples and single women facing different fertility challenges – whether the cause is blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, sperm quality or unexplained infertility.
We are by your side throughout the entire IVF journey, from the first consultation to a positive pregnancy test and beyond.
To increase the number of eggs that can be retrieved, the ovaries are stimulated with individually adjusted hormones over 2–4 weeks. We monitor your progress closely with ultrasound to find the optimal dosage and ensure the best possible outcome. During this period, you can usually continue your daily life with work and leisure activities as normal.
When the follicles are ready, we perform an egg retrieval under light sedation and local anaesthesia. Using vaginal ultrasound, a thin needle gently draws out the fluid from the follicles where we find the eggs. The procedure takes about 15–20 minutes, and you can go home the same day.
In our IVF laboratory, the eggs are fertilized with sperm. In traditional IVF, eggs and sperm are placed together in a culture dish, allowing the sperm to naturally fertilize the egg, much like it would in the fallopian tube.
When sperm quality is reduced, if previous attempts with conventional IVF have been unsuccessful, or when using frozen eggs in treatment, we instead perform ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection). With this method, the embryologist identifies sperm cells that exhibit good motility and normal morphology, and selects one of these to inject directly into the egg using a fine micropipette. This increases the chances of successful fertilization.
When there is no sperm present in the semen, it is often still possible to find sperm directly in the testicles or in the small ducts around them. Using gentle needle techniques or minor surgical procedures, we can retrieve sperm that are then used in IVF treatment. In these cases, we usually perform what is called the ICSI method, where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg to facilitate fertilization. This gives many couples the chance to achieve a pregnancy, even when no sperm is found in the ejaculate.
After 16–18 hours, we check if fertilization has occurred. The embryos are then cultured in a safe, controlled, and optimal environment until day 5 (the blastocyst stage). This allows us to select the most viable embryo for transfer. Any additional high-quality embryos can be frozen and stored for future use, giving you both flexibility and peace of mind throughout your fertility journey.
When the uterine lining is ready, the best embryo is transferred with the help of a thin catheter. This procedure is quick and painless and resembles a simple gynaecological examination. Afterwards, you continue with hormonal support in the form of progesterone to help the embryo implant.
Around two weeks after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is performed. If positive, we do a first ultrasound after a few more weeks to confirm the pregnancy before you continue with standard maternity care.
During a normal menstrual cycle, one egg matures and is released, while the other follicles that began to mature are reabsorbed. Before undergoing IVF treatment, a carefully planned hormone therapy is performed to optimize the chances of success. The goal of this treatment is to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple follicles, which in turn increases the number of mature eggs available for fertilization. The hormone treatment is tailored to you and usually lasts for 2-4 weeks. During the treatment period, ultrasound examinations are performed to monitor the progress of the treatment.
It is important to emphasize that during hormone treatment, your daily life can continue as usual. Work and leisure activities do not need to be affected, allowing you the freedom to focus on your treatment while still enjoying life.
